About Thessaloniki
An ancient Greek city. A Hellenistic city. A Roman city. A Byzantine city. A Balkan city. A city of the East. A European city.
Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece with a population of 1,000,000 inhabitants, is one of the oldest cities in Europe. It stretches over twelve kilometres in a bowl formed by low hills facing a bay that opens into the Gulf Thermaikos.
It was founded about 315 B.C., on a site of old prehistoric settlements going back to 2300 B.C., by Cassander, King of Macedonia, and was named after his wife, Thessaloniki, sister of Alexander The Great.
Since then, Thessaloniki has become the chief city of Macedonia and its most important commercial port.
Thessaloniki: A city of the sea, a city of the sun, a city of communication and exchanges, a Mediterranean city-port.
Today Thessaloniki has a modern port, a thriving industry and a dynamic
trade. It maintains strong links with the Balkans, Eastern Europe and the
countries of the Black Sea. A city pulsating with students and their troubles,
with researchers and scientists of the largest University in the country.
Telephone:
area code 2310, country code 30
Climate:
The average temperature in October is approx. 21°C. The climate of Thessaloniki
is ideal, especially beginning October, during the Congress (between 21°C
and 27°C). Furthermore, this is the only period during which there is
no rain or other extreme weather conditions. Also, the humidity levels are
minimum.
Credit cards:
Many restaurants do not accept credit cards. Each year, more and more restaurants
refuse them. Be ready to pay with cash or cheques even in the more expensive
institutions. If you want to pay with a credit card, please check before
that the restaurant accepts them.
Currency: EURO
Tip:
The tip is acceptable in Greece. Even if the restaurants add generally a
percentage for the service to your bill, it is well seen that you give a
small tip for the waiter. Equally, doorkeepers, maids and other service
personnel should be given tips, with the exception of the taxi drivers.
